PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE MARICOPA COUNTY BUDGET

  1. ADOPTION OF THE MARICOPA COUNTY FY 2025 BUDGET

Adopt the FY 2025 Maricopa County Budget in the amount of $3,872,283,672, by total appropriation for each department, fund and appropriation unit group listed in the attached schedules. This amount represents no change from the Tentative Budget of $3,872,283,672.

Budget Concerns:

  • The operating budget increases by 1.3%

  • While the property tax rate decreases, the revenues collected significantly increase

  • While the BOS should be applauded for staying below the maximum allowed levy per state law, the levy has still grown by $71 million since 2020, which is significant!

  • The full time employees are budgeted to increase by 931 employees -- which creates a permanent ongoing expense for decades because it greatly impacts the retirement funding burden on the taxpayers

  • The Maricopa County Recorder budget is increasing from $5 million in 2020 to over $17 million in 2024 -- more than tripling the budget -- while elections are run worse than ever before. This is especially alarming since public records show the Recorder oversees a surveillance and censorship operation to silence citizens with concerns on elections. Additionally, the MOU with the Recorder strips most responsibilities from the Department and transfers them to the Elections Department. So why does the Recorder need his budget tripled while overseeing a fraction of the responsibilities?
