Item 4 — Matter 26-514: Automated license plate readers and other crime detection / prevention technology

• Exact agenda title: Discussion on automated license plate readers and other crime detection prevention technology employed by the Apache Junction Police Department.

• This is a work-session discussion of ALPR and related crime-tech the Police Department already uses. It is not a ban vote.

• Do not confuse this with Tuesday’s Oct 6 public hearing on Ordinance 1579 / Chapter 17 “rules” and Resolution 26-43 — that package keeps the cameras under paper rules and is not reform.

• Why this matters: Apache Junction already runs plate-reader surveillance. Tonight’s item is about how that tech is employed — not about taking it down. Residents can press Council to cancel the cameras and pass a real ban, not dress up the network with policies.

• Ask: show up and tell Council you want the ALPR network cancelled and a brand-agnostic ban — not more “rules” that leave the cameras running. Bring the same message to Tuesday’s Oct 6 hearing on Ord. 1579.
